Japan vs Sweden in the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023
In the quarter-finals clash between Japan and Sweden, Sweden secured a spot in
the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-finals for the fifth time with a tight 2-1
victory. The goals were scored by Ilestedt (32') and Angeldahl (51') for
Sweden, while Hayashi (87') managed to pull one back for Japan.
Sweden's strong performance was evident after their previous win against
reigning champions USA in the Round of 16, and they carried that confidence
into this match. The breakthrough arrived in the first half when Ilestedt, an
unexpected contender for the adidas Golden Boot, capitalized on a set piece
situation, netting her fourth goal of the tournament.
Sweden came close to extending their lead before halftime when Asllani's
powerful volley was tipped onto the post by Yamashita. In the second half,
Sweden was granted a penalty due to a handball in Japan's box. Angeldahl
confidently converted the penalty, increasing Sweden's lead.
Although Japan had a chance to narrow the gap with a penalty of their own,
Ueki's shot hit the crossbar. Japan persisted and nearly found the net with a
Fujino free-kick that struck both the bar and the post. Eventually, Hayashi's
well-placed shot brought Japan within striking distance, creating an exciting
finish.
Despite Japan's efforts, Sweden managed to hold on to their lead, securing a
spot in the semi-finals. Japan exited the competition, while Sweden advanced
and is now set to face Spain in the next stage of the tournament. [no_toc]
